Harper’s Playground inspires vital communities by creating innovative playgrounds for people of all abilities. We envision a more inclusive world, one playground at a time. We value Community, Inclusion & PLAY!
Launched in 2010, we began as a single project for a single child. Harper Rose Goldberg and he family discovered that the typical playground is of little to no use for children who experience disability. Because Harper uses a walker and was unable to play at her neighborhood playground, her parents, April and Cody Goldberg, asked Portland Parks & Recreation to help them change the reality. When the response was, “we have no money in the budget for any new projects at this time.” the Goldbergs decided to take matters into their own hands. They assembled a design team, raised the money to pay for it and hired the contractor to see it through to completion. Literally 1,000s of friends and family from far and wide pitched in time, money or both. The playground was opened on November 3rd, 2012 and is far and away one of the most popular play areas in the Portland Metro area. People of all abilities come from far and wide to experience the benefits of a natural and inclusive play area.
What We Do
Harper’s Playground is currently looking for it’s second site. We are also currently consulting with several cities around the country who have approached us seeking assistance in repeating our model. Activities we engage in include an annual “Community Play Day” at our Arbor Lodge Park location, consulting, advocating and assisting in the development of new projects and information sharing. We also host quarterly clean-up parties at our inaugural Arbor Lodge Harper’s Playground.
