“The music resonated with the audience, which responded with sustained applause and enthusiastic bravos…” – James Bash, Oregon Music News, November 17, 2011
The Portland Youth Philharmonic, founded in 1924, is America’s first youth orchestra. Founded decades before youth orchestras in other major cities, it became the model for youth orchestras across the nation. Today PYP supports two full symphony orchestras, a chamber orchestra, a wind ensemble and one string orchestra. David Hattner is its fifth Conductor and Music Director, and the first to be born in America.
Members range in age from 7 to 23, are accepted by audition and represent approximately 100 different schools throughout the region. The 300 musicians who are accepted each year commit to an intensive schedule of rehearsals and the performance of repertoire that closely parallels that of professional orchestras.
Each year PYP presents multiple concert series: a four-concert subscription series in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall; Camerata PYP Chamber Orchestra Concerts in the Pearl District; concerts in Vancouver’s Skyview High School; and, in its second season, Cushion Concerts designed for families with children aged 2-8 at the World Forestry Center.
