Berry Madness!

It’s hard to imagine something more perfect than a ripe red Pacific Northwest strawberry, fresh off the vine. It tastes of summer and childhood, the perfect blend of tart and sweet. We are lucky to live in a place that gives us ready access not just to strawberries, but to blackberries, raspberries, black caps, marionberries, loganberries, and many other healthy and delicious fruits.

How to get those berries? You can pick your own at one of the many U-Pick spots nearby. We’ve got a roundup of some of our favorites in the June/July issue of PDX Parent. Before you head out, be sure to read up on these U-Pick tips from Bella Organics.

If you’re not quite feeling the U-Pick this year, no problem. Check out our Farmers Market guide for the DL on where and when you can pick up a pint of your favorites.

And now the fun part – what to do with those berries. Well, assuming you can refrain from eating them all fresh, here are some great ideas.

PB&J Pie from Pacific Pie Co. This decadent take on an old classic will delight even the pickiest eater.

Greek Yogurt Berry Pops from Oregon Berry Festival. Refreshing and even healthy, this pop is a summer must.

Strawberry Rhubarb Slab Pie from New Seasons. This free-form pie is a yummy way to get your kids active in the kitchen without having to stress about perfection. (And it will still taste like perfection!)

Blackberry Sage Jam with Fermented Kombucha from Portland Homestead Supply Co. For those hoping to make the spoils of summer last just a bit longer, this unusual jam is great choice.

Let us know what you do with your berries in the comments or tag us on Facebook so we can see your picking and post-picking ideas!
