Last Look: Postcards of Solidarity

On Friday, January 27, an executive order barred all people from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States, including Syrian refugees fleeing terror at home. In our very blue corner of the world, that sparked outrage and protests at PDX airport. But it also spurred our staff — led by online editor Ali Wilkinson — to action.

She created Postcards of Solidarity as an event on our PDX Parent Facebook page, encouraging families to come decorate postcards of support and love for us to mail to mosques and Muslim community centers close to home, as well as those around North America that have been the target of religiously based hate crimes. We hoped at least a few people would show up. Instead, we were overwhelmed by the turnout, and by the nearly 1,000 postcards that got made.

Local photographer Irene Hess captured these photos of grown-ups and kids crammed into every available space at the Know Thy Food Cooperative on February 4. With markers, pens and crayons you — our amazing community of parents and kids — showed that in Portland, we will always stand up for our neighbors of all religions.
