Out and About: Family Eating at Fat City

Weekend mornings: we’re up already, so we might as well make the most of it. In that spirit, my family headed out to Fat City Cafe in Multnomah Village, early enough that Google predicted it would not be busy. This is a popular breakfast stand-by for good reason. The old school diner ambience, fun decor, great food, and kid-friendly service make Fat City Cafe a great choice for a weekend morning trip.

Our friendly waitress spotted my daughter Maggie looking bored, and asked me if she’d like some toys. I didn’t think she would want “toys,” since she is in the first grade, but I thought it was sweet of the waitress to ask, so I said yes. Maggie and I were both pleasantly surprised when the waitress returned with a Frozen lunch box with My Little Ponies, Frozen characters, and other princess figurines. Score!

Checking out the quirky decor is a fun activity on its own. Old license plates line the walls, along with all kinds of street signs, Portland memorabilia, and a (possibly) life-sized Sasquatch. On our recent visit, it was decorated for Halloween, with cobwebs, spiders, and scary monsters.

The food came out quickly, and there was plenty of it. We shared the homemade cinnamon roll, which was fresh, sticky and sweet. Fat City has a great kids menu, and Maggie ordered the half portion of French Toast for $4.25.

Maggie liked her french toast and also ate most of my biscuit (which came out warm with butter). The adults liked the omelets full of veggies and meat, and crispy hash browns. There was good coffee in real diner mugs, and lots of refills.

Fat City Cafe is in the heart of Multnomah Village, so after you eat, you can spend some time window shopping at Annie Bloom’s (open at 9) or Thinker Toys (opens at 9 on Saturdays, and 10 on Sundays). It’s also a quick drive to Gabriel Park, with a play structure and many paved trails for walking and biking.
