Editor’s Note

Some parents work in a corner office. Some parents work at a corner coffee shop. And some parents work at the corner of the kitchen table. In the issue, we celebrate all of these, and everywhere in between, in our first-ever issue devoted to parents in the workplace. You’ll find profiles of three of Portland’s most family-friendly workplaces, along with a close examination of the direct sales phenomenon, which has made huge inroads in the PDX parents community. Plus a field trip to an old-school arcade, a family house hunt that ends in an unexpected place, and the scoop on the city’s best new burger joint.

On our cover:
Local photographer Irene Tejaratchi Hess shot this photo as part of this month’s “Making it Work” feature, for our first-ever issue dedicated to parents in the workplace. We chose this shot, of Asian Pacific Network of Oregon employee Jeanice Chieng and her two boys, ages 4 and 2, because it perfectly captures the delicate juggle that so many of us perform each day.
