PDX Parent Snags Five Parenting Media Association Design & Editorial Awards!

We’re winners! PDX Parent magazine just won five Parenting Media Association Design & Editorial Awards, which showcases the country’s best regional parenting publications. We won a bronze for our Play Room section and a silver for best single page design for October 2016’s Recipe File: It’s Toasted! We also won three gold awards: one for investigative feature: Is Your Child Care Up to Code by Beth Slovic; one for news feature: The Hard Sell by Kat Merck; and one for best interior illustration for Dolled Up illustrated by Maggie Olson, styled by Denise Castañon. We’re honored by the awards and will keep striving to bring  our readers the best writing and reporting, and smartly designed articles that we possibly can.

Keep reading for links to the winning content, and what the judges had to say.

Is Your Child Care Up to Code? The judges said, “This report provides a great service to the community by mining the data and documents about state investigations into child-care complaints and code violations.  A real asset is the author’s review of the investigation process and how parents can understand and assimilate information to make informed decisions about child-care providers. This is vital, and often misunderstood, information that, if overlooked, can have serious consequences.”

The Hard Sell The judges said, “Anyone with a Facebook account has noticed the proliferation of parents with new stay-at-home businesses. Great story examining the viability of these new age-vendors of cosmetics and skin care products. The story presents the facts to parents and clearly points out the positives and the negatives. This is journalism at its best.”

Dolled Up The judges said, “This is a great, engaging, illustration that has the original style of an illustrator that has found their voice. There’s lots of visual interest here, and great stylistic unity.”

It’s Toasted The judges said, “This package tosses in a number of design elements, yet it manages to hang together to present quite a bit of information in an attractive, easy to read page.”

Play Room The judges said, “The tone of the writing exudes friendliness and a sense of wanting to share your corner of Oregon and its people and products with everyone. The way content is presented and paced throughout the section makes for a really nice reading experience.”

Of course, we wouldn’t do any of this work without you. We are so grateful for this warm and awesome parenting community. We can’t wait to bring you more of the content that you love.
