Peacock Lane Set to Awe Visitors

One of Portland’s most beloved holiday traditions is gearing up for another year of lights, community, and-—of course-—hot chocolate.

For decades, the residents of Peacock Lane–near 39th and Belmont–have been putting up their legendary light displays, nativity scenes, rotating Christmas trees, and life-like replicas of Santa and Frosty.

The displays run from December 15 through December 31, 6 to 11 pm. The event is free! There is also free hot cocoa and cider, but donations are gladly accepted for the drinks.

A Few Tips

Go by foot. PDX Parent staffers recommend walking the street instead of driving! Check out one of the pedestrian-only nights when cars are not allowed on the street. This year, these are taking place on December 15, 16 and 17. You should plan to park several blocks away and walk over. Or you can take TriMet; check their handy Peacock Lane Travel Game Plan.

If you drive, plan accordingly. It’s best to go during off-peak times, before 7 pm and after 10 pm, or anytime after December 25. Follow Peacock Lane on Facebook and Twitter for traffic updates, including any street closures. The Portland Police monitors the street’s traffic for safety and overcrowding. And if you are driving down the street, turn off your headlights so everyone can enjoy the decorations without the glare of headlights.

Bring some cash. Donations for hot drinks cover the cost of the drinks, plus Peacock Lane neighbors will also donate a portion of the proceeds to a local charity.

Hate crowds? After December 25, there is much less traffic. Just know that after the 24th, there is no cocoa booth and there are fewer of the unofficial carolers and performers.
