Magical Retelling of "Snow White" at Broadway Rose

If you’re a lover of fairytales, musicals, and happily-ever-afters, you’re sure to thoroughly enjoy Broadway Rose Theatre Company’s production of Snow White, a magical retelling of the classic fairytale. My nine-year-old daughter and I share a love of both theater and Mommy-Daughter dates, so our outing to the Deb Fennell Auditorium (on the Tigard High School campus at 9000 SW Durham Rd in Tigard) was a real treat.

Before taking our seats, we were excited to deck out my daughter in princess paraphernalia, which was available for purchase in the lobby. Tiaras, sparkly wands and dwarf caps were available to purchase for $2 apiece, giving the patrons (young and old alike) the opportunity to get in the spirit of the show and have an inexpensive souvenir to boot!

We were delighted by the beautiful costumes and set, the talented performers, and the fun twists and retelling of a familiar classic tale. I appreciated the focus on overcoming obstacles with friendship and a song in your heart, and my daughter and I both got a kick out of the song about the “skeerds.” I particularly enjoyed the vibrant, entertaining narration by the character Lyndra (Hannah Lauren Wilson), the commanding performance of the Queen (Dru Rutledge), and the silly antics of the dwarves. My daughter was enchanted by Snow White (Kelsey Bentz) and laughed her way through every scene involving the dwarves, especially enjoying the character Bashful (Charles Grant). My daughter also loved seeing the summer drama camp students (aged 8-12 years) performing in the show. She got excited about the idea of being able to perform in such a big production and is already asking about participating in the drama camp next year!

This musical play is appropriate and entertaining for all ages, and even encouraged a bit of audience participation mid-performance, giving the children in the audience a chance to get some of their wiggles out and speak up for a moment. Run time was approximately 50 minutes and there was no intermission.

For several minutes following the performance, cast members in costume greeted guests outside the theater for autographs and photos. The crowd of young girls anxious to meet Snow White was large, as we expected, but Snow White stayed long enough to greet all the children waiting to meet her. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize the other cast members wouldn’t stay out quite as long, and my daughter missed her chance to meet Bashful and the other dwarves as she had hoped to do. We’ll plan our visits with characters better next time.

Snow White runs daily from July 19-22 at 11am. Tickets are $10 for youth (ages 2-18), $12 for adults, and children under age 2 are free. The next Broadway Rose summer performance, Pinocchio, runs August 16-19. Tickets can be purchased online here.
