Subscription Box Review: Girls Can! Crate

Subscription Boxes for Kids

From cooking to creating, keep kids busy with fresh, fun activities delivered to your door. We’ve tested out a variety of boxes and will roll out a new review for you each week. Up this week: Girls Can! Crate.

Girls Can! Crate

This monthly box is on a mission to inspire girls to greatness. Each box celebrates fearless women who have helped make the world a better place. The month we sampled focused on the painters Frida Kahlo, Mary Cassat and Lois Mailou Jones. The kit came with all the materials needed to complete three art activities: self portraits, a paper-flower headband and a colored cellophane project that mimicked the look of Jones’s stained glass pieces. (Other kits focus on engineering and science.)

My 5-year-old son was actually the most excited to test out this box until he realized it was all about girls. Even though he always wants to do what his big sister is doing, he tried to boycott the activity. Luckily I just happened to have some small canvases on hand identical to the one in the kit and he came around to the idea of doing a self-portrait à la Frida Kahlo. My 7-year-old daughter had been doing different sorts of self-portraits with her teacher before school was closed, so she was especially excited to create a new portrait. My husband even sat down to paint himself.

The verdict: My whole family loved painting self portraits. It didn’t matter that my son gave himself three mohawks in his painting. I really liked how everything needed was included in the Girls Can! Crate (even things like a palette and paintbrush) and that we still have two more activities to do.

$32.95 per month for a single crate or 3 months; $29.95 per month for 6 months; $27.95 per month for 12 months. Pro tip: You can add a sibling for $9 more a month! Girlscancrate.com
