Building strong minds and bodies for over 32 years.
Welcome to Westside Academy!
We are excited that you are considering registering for class this season. Westside has been in business for over 30 years and takes pride in producing some of the most well rounded dancers, gymnasts and students in the Portland area. Our staff members (many of whom started their education right here) have performed and worked alongside some of the leading professionals in the business! Your child will find their classes to be challenging yet fun as they move through the year building on their skills. As the years go on you will find they truly become a part of the “Westside Family” building friendships that last well into adulthood.
Our season culminates with two fantastic shows that we consider the best in the area. Our dance recital takes place in a professional theater in downtown Portland under the bright lights of the Newmark Stage and includes all our dance and acro classes! Our Artistic and Rhythmic gymnastics students will be given the opportunity to participate in our annual Mini Olympics rotating between all the events like real Olympians!
In addition to their dance and gymnastics classes, Westside Performing Arts Pre-School has a challenging curriculum that prepares your child to hit the ground running in Kindergarten
We hope you feel welcome as you begin to get to know the “Westside Way”. Please do not hesitate to ask any of our staff questions at anytime, we are here to help!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a membership fee? There is a one-time $25.00 family membership fee. A $10.00 re-start fee will be applied for any member who has been inactive for a 12 month period of time. The fee covers the processing of new accounts and student registration.
What benefits do I receive as a member? Members are able to enroll in classes, receive discounts on camps, birthday parties and special events at the academy.
When is tuition due? Tuition is due on or before the FIRST DAY of the month. Late fees will automatically be charged to all accounts with a balance due after the first. It is recommended and encouraged that tuition is processed through the Electronic Funds Checking Transfer System. Our EFT system is 100% safe and confidential. Customers enrolled in EFT have the added benefit of charging pro shop items and other fees to their account. Westside Academy also accepts checks and cash. Credit & Debit cards are NOT accepted.
Why is the gymnastics class tuition more than the dance tuition? The gym ratio of students to teacher is smaller and the gym insurance and overhead costs are more expensive.
What if I miss a class? Students can schedule a make up class through the office. Tuition is not prorated for missed classes. Make ups are forfeited if a student drops from the program.
None of the make-up times work for me, what should I do? One of the advantages of being a member of Westside Academy is the wide range of classes offered. If your child is signed up for classes, they can do a make up in either a dance, a gymnastics class, or Indoor Play Park. As long as the age and level are appropriate, you are always encouraged to try new things.
What is the difference in class levels? Level 1 is for beginning students with no experience required. All other level placements are based on skill charts. If you are interested in seeing these skills and what is involved in the requirements for the next level, please ask your teacher. The front office can also assist you with this.
What is the referral credit? If you refer a new family to our facility and they register for a class, you can receive a $20 credit towards your account. You may refer as many students as you like and receive multiple credits. You will need to notify the front office after the new family has registered.
Is my child being challenged? If your child is more advanced, their teacher will move them up. Many of our teachers have worked here over 15 years and have a great deal of experience with placement and skill level. Your child might be more advanced in one area, but need improvement in another. If you ever have any questions about how your child is doing, please leave a note for your teacher and they will be happy to discuss your child’s progress with you.
My child didn’t get moved up with the rest of the class, is there something wrong? Each child has a gift, some of them open their gifts at different times. Although your child didn’t move up this year, maybe next year they will move up, maybe even skip a level. Children should experience all aspects of dance and gymnastics placement over the years. Some years they might be at the bottom of the class, the top, or be right in the middle. One year they might look up to someone in the class, another year they might be the role model. No matter where they are placed, they will be learning and growing.
How can I talk to my child’s teacher? Classes are scheduled to get out five minutes early. This is the time students receive hand stamps, flyers, and newsletters, gather their shoes and belongings and teachers are available. However, if you have a private matter or something that might take more than a few minutes, please leave a note at the front desk for the instructor. All of our full time staff and directors have academy email.
Why can’t I watch my child’s dance class every week? Although it is a joy to watch your child dance, it can be very distracting to the students. Students seem to focus more on “mommy” than they do themselves and their dance steps. That is why we limit the dates for viewing.
What is the recital? The recital, held in late June, is our annual dance presentation, featuring all dance students in a dazzling costumed performance held downtown Portland at the Newmark theatre.
What if I don’t think my child will be ready to perform at the recital? We have been putting on dance recitals since 1983 and our students have always had a positive experience. Sometimes you need to try something before you know for sure. The joy that comes from watching your child perform on stage really cannot be described; it must be experienced.
Why am I charged for a recital costume fee? Our dance costumes are very high quality and they are yours to keep. Many students use their costumes after recital for Halloween and dress up.
Why do I have to pay for recital tickets? The price of tickets covers theater rental and staffing.
Why can’t I videotape the recital? With over 600 people in the audience it would very difficult to watch the recital with people video taping, moving in and out of their seats. Video taping during rehearsals is allowed.
What is Mini-Olympics? Mini Olympics is the year-end gymnastic performance featuring all gymnastics students. It is held here at the academy in early June.
Why am I charged for Mini-Olympics? The fee for Mini Olympics covers the following costs: uniform (for you to keep), your own official trophy, and entry for your entire family. There are many additional expenses associated with this event: staffing, bleacher rental, etc.
How do I schedule my child for private lessons? How much are they? Students who take private lessons at the Academy must be currently enrolled in a class. Prices are set by the individual instructor/coach. Please email your director and they can lead you in the right direction.
How long are class sessions? All classes at the academy go month to month. Our Fall schedule runs September through June. Summer classes run July and August.
What kind of summer activities does Westside offer? We offer a full range of summer activities, All Day Activity Camp, gymnastic camps, multiple types of dance camps and much, much more.
What do I do if I can’t make it to class due to bad weather? Westside follows the same closure policy as Tigard School District in regards to bad weather. If they are closed, we are closed. If they open late, we open at 10:30 a.m. If you are at any risk, please stay safe at home and schedule a make-up class. You are always welcome to make up any missed classes.

My daughters have been enrolled in dance, gymnastics, acro (both recreational and performing) and summer camps at Westside since 2004. We have also had several birthdays parties. The instructors are outstanding and caring which helps them build solid relationships with the students. The front office staff is always very responsive and helpful with any issues. The summer camps always have timely themes and convenient for parents who work since you can enroll daily or weekly and have the option of half day or full day. My daughters have been on many of the all day trips and have been closely supervised and safety was always their first priority. The showcases, end of year recital and Mini Olympics have always been very professional and exciting for my daughters to participate in and showcase what they have learned during the year. I would highly recommend Westside to any parents looking for a quality program for their children.
All three of my daughters have taken many combined years of gymnastics and dance classes here, and we have never been disappointed. It’s a fantastic space with great equipment in the gym and several nice dance rooms. They do a big dance recital downtown every year, and the gymnasts can opt to participate in the Mini Olympics each year. Yes, your cutie WILL learn a lot, but what makes it really special is the STAFF. Every employee we’ve encountered, from the very helpful and ALWAYS friendly front desk receptionists, to the coaches that truly care about the kids and their learning, has been wonderful.
We’ve also used their Parents Night Out and Birthday Party offerings, which are both highly recommended!
No hesitation giving this facility Five Stars.
My granddaughter has been dancing at Westside for nearly 13 years. She started when she was barely three years old. Our Westside experience has only been positive. The teachers are experienced professionals who care about their students and are dedicated to help each dancer achieve their best. She has made lifelong friendships through her dance at Westside. In fact, Westside is like her second family. I highly recommend Westside Dance Academy!!
Both of my kids attended the pre-school and loved it, they learned a ton and had a great transition to elementary school. Part of the school curriculum is dance or gymnastics depending on the day of the week. I loved that my kids had some type of physical activity during their day. My daughter is 9 and continues to dance at Westside, she loves her dance teachers, has many great kids to look up to and has made lifelong friends.
My kids have been attending Westside for over 13 years and we love it there! We have experienced every department- preschool-aged dance and gymnastics, girls’ gymnastics team, rhythmic team, acro, hip-hop, dance- we’ve done it all! The staff is friendly and helpful, and the teachers and coaches are experienced and dedicated. They put the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the kids ahead of competition, while still giving them the excellent training they need to develop as dancers and gymnasts. We look forward to many more years at Westside!
Polly has been at Westside since 1987. She grew up dancing at the Academy and has trained locally and throughout the United States. Polly teaches tap, jazz, lyrical, acrobatics and ballet in addition to managing the dance department.
Polly has two daughters — Audrey Ann and Eliza Jean — who are both following in their mothers footsteps as Westside Academy students!
